Les Capucins contemporary art centre, supported by the city of Embrun, is located in a former chapel in the French Southern Alps.

Since 2011, the art center produces three exhibitions a year, presented between April and October, which are accompanied by a program of events, monthly screenings of documentary films and outreach actions for all audiences: visits and workshops for individuals and groups, schoolchildren and senior citizens, passers-by and regulars.

The program includes solo and group exhibitions, with artists from a wide variety of backgrounds and careers. Conceived as a network with other art venues and in dialogue with local stakeholders, it echoes societal issues. Exhibitions are conceived on site, tailor-made for the venue and linked with the history and specificities of a rural and mountain setting.

Residencies are an integral part of the art center’s identity. Each year, four artists are welcomed and accompanied by the team: two by invitation, for residencies in schools lasting between a week and a month; two others, following a call for projects launched in winter, to develop research over a two-month period.

Since 2020, local artists also benefit from the regional cultural affairs department’s summer programs, in particular “Rouvrir le monde” since 2022: two-week residencies in nearby social, medical or leisure facilities.
