To celebrate the 40thanniversary of the Centre Pompidou, twelve contemporary art centres that are members of the DCA network offered, throughout 2017, curatorial experiments based on works selected from the Centre Pompidou’s multidisciplinary resources (visual arts, photography, design, video, cinema, dance, etc.).
This was an unprecedented collaboration: contemporary art centres do not generally work from collections. They are laboratories for artistic experimentation where new works are produced and exhibited, many of which then join public or private collections.
Shifting the gaze on these collections by showing the works of the Centre Pompidou through the curatorial and mediation practices specific to contemporary art centres is a unique opportunity for these laboratories for artistic experimentation.
These experiments are also those of the regional dissemination of the Centre Pompidou’s collections. They assert the dynamics of cultural decentralisation in which the contemporary art centres are involved with the support of the local authorities.
Thanks to this cooperation with contemporary art centres, the Centre Pompidou’s collections were accessible to the widest possible audience all over France throughout 2017. It was also an opportunity to highlight the creativity of these constantly innovative cultural and artistic structures.
