Established in 1999 in what had been a notary public's residence in Noisy-le-Sec, in France's Seine-Saint-Denis département, La Galerie offers a broad audience an art programme centering on an annual theme. The theme for 2013–2014 is 'Forms of Affects'. La Galerie's artistic director is Emilie Renard

Four exhibitions per year accompanied by authoritative publications are an opportunity to discover new work by internationally recognised and emergent artists.

Assisting artists on a day to day basis with residencies and production of new works, La Galerie has created its niche on the international art scene by publishing a free bilingual magazine for each exhibition and, since 2006, welcoming resident curators from abroad.

In addition, as part of each exhibition, the La Galerie team offers educational and cultural activities as well as liaison facilities. A mediator providing help and guidance for visitors is present full-time in the exhibition space, and a documentation area offers useful back-up material.

All La Galerie activities are free.

For the family
Every Saturday, an invitation to the 4–12 year olds to explore a fresh theme from the exhibition: a special tour and a workshop offer the chance for fun discovery of the works.
For the 4–5 age group we favour a sensory approach, using games and new art skills aimed at triggering awareness and creativity.
For the 6–12 year olds, focus is mainly on training the eye, coming to grips with the works and picking up a contemporary art vocabulary. While having fun, they will expand their critical spirit, their imagination and their expressive and creative capacities.

Every Saturday during the exhibitions:
-    ages 6/12: 2:30 – 4:00 pm
-    ages 4/5: 4:30 – 5:15 pm
-    With their parents, plus a snack: same time, last Saturday of each exhibition

'The Great Art Blog'
After a tour of the exhibition at La Galerie, the children add their impressions to the blog:

Magazines for ages 6–12

Free! La Galerie also offers an instructive, fun, magazine for kids to use as a starting point for their tour. And with stuff to fill in, on your own or in class.

Ages 13–15: "I LOL Art"

Exchange, stimulation, creativity and a critical spirit: this is what the I LOL Art workshops are all about. They invite 13–15 year olds to create together, using text, photos, drawings and moving images, while also offering an insight into art centre professions and what goes on behind the scenes.
> Every Wednesday, 4:00 – 5:30 pm

Retired people: 'Art and Afternoon Tea'
On one Thursday during each exhibition: a tour of the exhibition and a teatime chat

The visitor services team is here to welcome you: community associations, people with physical or social disabilities: tailor-made tours with discussions, and workshop-tours. Advance booking required.

Artists' residencies

- Every year La Galerie, Centre for Contemporary Art in Noisy-le-Sec, welcomes a resident visual artist born or living in France. Lasting nine months, each residency provides assistance with the production of a body of work which is then included in a group exhibition at La Galerie.

The artist is provided with furnished accommodation of 90 square metres – bedroom, living room, kitchenette, bathroom, large studio and storeroom – by the Municipality of Noisy-le-Sec. The accommodation is in Noisy-le-Sec, not far from the art centre and within easy reach of Paris: 10 minutes by RER express train, and a bus ride from the Mairie des Lilas metro stop. The artist is given financial and logistical assistance with his or her project . He or she is also asked to contribute, on a paid basis, to events in local primary and secondary schools and universities, as well as at La Galerie.

Each year the residency revolves around a different theme.
Nicolas Momein, the artist  selected for 2013–2014, will present works produced during his residency as part of a group exhibition.

Residency for an exhibition curator from abroad

Every year since 2006 La Galerie has been welcoming a curator from abroad for a three-month residency. The aim of the exercise is an exhibition and an opportunity for the resident curator to get to know France's contemporary art scene: artists, art professionals, other galleries and art centres, etc.

In 2013 the choice was Tobi Maier (b. 1976, lives in São Paulo), for his project The Second Sex – A Visual Note, with artists Mie Van Kerckhoven, Ilene Segalove, Marianne Wex and Travelling Féministe, in partnership with the Centre Audiovisuel Simone de Beauvoir in Paris.
